'SRINGARAM - DANCE OF LOVE'
- film screening at IFFLA
Ektaa along with Indian
Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) copresented the unique film that
gives a glimpse into the evolution of Dance and Music in South India.
Devadasis have occupied a position
of privilege under the protection of the state and served as the main repositories
of traditional arts, particularly dance and music since the 10 th Century.
In 1920s Tamil Nadu, Madhura becomes the principal devadasi of her village
temple. By the prevailing system, she also becomes mistress to the local
princely landlord, the Mirasu. She accepts her symbolic but powerless position
in society until she witnesses the unreasonable demands and vagrant abuses
of power the Mirasu wields.
In her directorial debut, Sharada
Ramanathan refutes the idea of feminism as a western construct by illustrating
how women of yore may have utilized the arts as a subversive route towards
emancipation.
