Nov 19th & 20th SANGAMA 2005 - Seminar on the art and architechture of South India
A two day seminar on the art and architecture of the Vijaynagara period (13th thru 17th century)with a special emhasis on understanding the 'Sangama' or confluence of cultures. For more info please go to www.kannadavrinda.org
Where: AHMANSON AUDITORIUM, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY
KALA SANGAMA - a cultural program as a part of the seminar, that brings to life the Vijaynagara era through dance, music and poetry. Featured artists include Ramya Harishankar, Sweta Bharadwaj and a Yaksha Gana group from India.

DIWALI - FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
was in celebration of one of the more widely recognized festivals of India. Whatever community you belong to, its a celebration of the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

The cultural program featured Kathak, Bhangra, Folk and Bollywood dancing as well as some music.

'Sacred Drums'

Journey through the vast continent of India on the rhythms of a great musical legacy: classical percussion. Musically challenging and emotionally evocative, improvisation is the hallmark of this evening featuring a gathering of India's most celebrated and electrifying percussionists. Tabla Maestro, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri from North India and Ghatam (clay pot) and vocal percussion master, Vidwan T.H. Subash Chandran from South India were joined by two of their brightest disciples, Kanjira (tamborine) master Ganesh Kumar and American percussionist Jim Santi Owen on morsing (jaw harp). Swapanji has been the principal tabla accompanist of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan for over 25 years. The preeminent exponent of the Lucknow school of tabla, he is a virtuoso soloist, accompanist, and teacher. Subashji is one of South India's most renowned percussionists and teachers. A highly acclaimed exponent of the ghatam, he is also known around the world for konnokol, his dazzling vocal percussion.

EVENT: 'Xpressions - California Masters of Indian Dance' - A part of 'Dance Conversations', a two day symposium and festival, the evening featured works by the renowned Masters of Dance in California including Anjani Ambegaokar (Kathak), Nandita Behera (Odissi), Ramaa Bharadwaj (Kuchipudi), Ramya Harishankar (Bharata Natyam), Mythili Kumar (Bharata Natyam), K.P. Kunhiraman (Kathakali) and Viji Prakash (Bharata Natyam).

'Shivkumar Sharma and Zakir Hussain - Santoor and Tabla' - two of the greatest artistes on the respective instruments. Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is the leading exponent of the Santoor and Ustad Zakir Hussain is an international phenomenon who is undoubtedly the most popular Tabla maestro. Although the two have performed and recorded extensively, they create a new musical experience every time they perform. An added bonus was that Pandit Shivkumar's son Rahul Sharma accompanied him for this concert. This concert was a joint presentation with Sangam Entertainment Group, SWAR and Artwallah.

Kathakali' performed by a company of dancers and musicians from Kerala – A rare treat, this art form from the southern state of Kerala is a theatrical spectacle. From elaborate costumes to highly dramatized facial movements, this classical dance form has a history spanning centuries. This company features some of the best talent including musicians and percussionists that will perform. The presentation comes courtesy of Anamica and is being co presented with OHM (Organization of Hindu Malayalees). They perform two exciting stories including Kalyana Sougandhikam, the episode in the Mahabharatha centered on Bhima's quest for the fragrant flower Sougandhikam and his encounter with Hanuman and Kiratham a story on Arjuna's effort to secure the divine arrow from Siva to help him in their oncoming war with the Kauravas.
