Leave it to the arts world to
bring together Irvine, India and Cleveland on one project.
The Irvine-based Arpana Foundation
will present an operatic dance ballet produced by the Cleveland Cultural
Alliance. Famed Indian violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman has teamed with choreographer
Rhadha to create "Jaya Jaya Devi," adapted from Hindu mythology. The performance
will feature colorful costumes and a blend of music from Southern and Northern
India.
The Bharata Natyam-style ballet
features eight female and three male dancers backed by vocalists and an
orchestra. The program celebrates various aspects of the Hindu goddess
Parvati (Devi) through dance and mini-morality plays. English narration
will help tell the story.
