CARNATIC MUSIC ON THE SAXOPHONE
'Prasant Radhakrishnan in concert'
A
21 year old virtuoso, Shri Prasant Radhakrishnan proved that age
is not a strong determinant of musical ability. His incredible saxophone
playing blended both his background in Carnatic (South Indian) Classical
Music and Jazz so well that it seemed like the two genres were one and
the same. -sdam.com
Prasant Radhakrishnan (www.prasantmusic.com)
is a versatile saxophonist identified with both the South Indian Classical
(Carnatic) and Jazz disciplines. He received initial training from veena
vidwan, Mrs. Vijaya Prabhakar. Prasant started learning Carnatic music
on saxophone under the able guidance of his guru, "Padmashri" Kadri Gopalnath,
in 1996. He underwent rigorous training during summers in India, and soon
began accompanying his guru in concerts and performing solo.
As part of an ongoing goal, Prasant
strives to put to rest misconceptions and preconceived notions about Carnatic
music and jazz as well as the use of saxophone in Carnatic music. Prasant
is creating a new path for the future of Carnatic music and Jazz.
His latest CD release 'East Facing'
is already receiving rave reviews.

use your help. Please visit www.helpvinay.org

2007, 3pm to 5pm
Ektaa Center co presented the 2007
Ravi Varma Memorial Art competition with OHM (Organization of Hindu Malayalees)
Raja
Ravi Varma (1848-1906) is considered one of the greatest painters in
the history of Indian art. Born in the state of Kerala, he belonged to
an illustrious family of scholars, poets and artists. Best known for his
paintings in oil, he was one of the first artists from India to gain international
repute for his work in this medium.
In April we co sponsored the Ravi
Varma Memorial Painting competition for children. Besides making our community
aware of the contribution to visual art by this famous painter from Kerala,
we wanted to give children an opportunity to showcase their talent. The
Organization for Hindu
Malayalees administered this contest and there were several winners.
From June 2nd through the 10th these
paintings were exhibited at the Ektaa Center. If you have a question, please
contact us via email at info@ektaacenter.org.
Additionally we held a special reception
on Sunday June 10th at 3pm at the Ektaa Center for the winners. Besides
their paintings we also had a few of our local artists who displayed their
