ears, he showed early promise playing solo when he was mere a child of
eight. It served as a springboard for his continued growth and recognition
as an accomplished sarod player. A regular performer on All India Radio,

at the tender age of five. He received his initial training under the able
guidance of Pandit Manik Paul (disciple of Great Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh)
and after that he received intensive training from Pandit Shankar Ghosh
for an extended period. After 3 years of advanced training from Ustad Zakir
Hussain, he has now bowed down his entire soul to Pandit Swapan Chowdhury.
As a successful accompanist, he has played Tabla with renowned musician
stalwarts like Ustad Rashid Khan, Ustad Ali Ahmed Hussain, Pandit V G Jog,
Pandit Viswamohan Bhat and many other stalwarts of the last decade. While

'SRINGARAM - DANCE OF LOVE' -
film screening - Orange County screening at the Ektaa Center
Devadasis have occupied a position
of privilege under the protection of the state and served as the main repositories
of traditional arts, particularly dance and music since the 10 th Century.
In 1920s Tamil Nadu, Madhura becomes the principal devadasi of her village
temple. By the prevailing system, she also becomes mistress to the local
princely landlord, the Mirasu. She accepts her symbolic but powerless position
in society until she witnesses the unreasonable demands and vagrant abuses
of power the Mirasu wields.
In her directorial debut, Sharada
Ramanathan refutes the idea of feminism as a western construct by illustrating
how women of yore may have utilized the arts as a subversive route towards
emancipation.
