MOVIE AND DINNER - 'GANGES: RIVER
TO HEAVEN'
In the city of Varanasi, the power
of Ganga, the Hindu mother goddess of the Ganges River is the strongest.
Each dawn she calls her children to the ghats. The young and the strong
purify themselves in the polluted waters. The old and the infirmed, too
weak for rituals wait for death. In time Ganga carries their souls, released
from the bondage of reincarnation, to heaven. Filmed in a hospice for the
dying, the film follows four families' struggle to grant a loved one's
final wish -- to go to Heaven. In their common quest the families become
part of the hordes of Hindus drawn to Varanasi's holy promise of freedom
from reincarnation. As the clans prepare for death life goes on for the
citizen of Varanasi - praying for health, dumping industrial waste, begging
for coins, bathing their children, selling souvenirs to tourists, monitoring
fecal chloroform levels, cremating their loved ones - all along the river
bank. The families' preparations go virtually unnoticed on the river, where
death is a daily part of life. Ganges: River to Heaven investigates the
inextricable bond between a river and it's people with unparalleled intimacy.
This documentary of a holy river, polluted from years of overuse, wonders
if the natural forces strong enough to sculpt the Himalayas and the beliefs
of a nation can survive the adoration of generations to come.

and his capacity to awaken us to the joy that is hidden inside our hearts,
makes Swamiji, a speaker who is very much in demand. Swamiji's goal is
to challenge the prevalent and oft- quoted statement that "happiness is
more a mirage than a reality, that it is impractical and best forgotten."
Those who have heard his series Mauj Mein Raho (Be Happy) are left with
no doubt that "happiness is indeed attainable despite all seeming challenges."

the truth underlying his discourses
